General Worker – Research Division

About the Company

Starke Ayres is a leading African specialist and international supplier of premium vegetable, flower, and lawn seed varieties for both commercial agriculture and home gardening. An opportunity is available for a General Worker within the Research division, based in Kempton Park.

Key Responsibilities

• Support all stages of plant cultivation, including seed sowing, seedling care, transplanting, pollination, harvesting, and seed processing to ensure successful seed production.
• Perform seed counting, packaging, and preparation activities.
• Soak, wash, and dry seedling trays and prepare seedling mix for tray filling.
• Fill seedling trays and planting pots with the appropriate growing medium.
• Sow seeds according to the approved sowing schedule.
• Transfer seedling trays from germination rooms to seedling houses after the required period and arrange them correctly.
• Prepare planting pots and arrange filled pots within greenhouses.
• Connect drippers to pots and ensure proper irrigation setup.
• Move seedlings to greenhouses and open fields as required.
• Prepare planting holes and transplant seedlings in the field.
• Identify flowers at the correct developmental stage and carry out emasculation in line with breeder instructions.
• Perform pollination and crossing activities as per the crossing book provided.
• Harvest crossed and self-pollinated fruits according to breeder guidelines.
• Extract, wash, ferment, and dry seeds following established procedures.
• Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in greenhouses and work areas.

Minimum Requirements

• National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) – essential
• Previous experience in the agricultural or research environment will be an advantage
