Role Overview

Cummins Inc. is seeking a motivated and technically inclined Apprentice – Engine Workshop Technician to join its Service team in Johannesburg. This apprenticeship offers hands-on exposure to Cummins engines and systems while developing diagnostic, mechanical, and safety competencies aligned with global industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of Cummins products, tools, and applicable industry standards.
  • Comply with safe work procedures, policies, and quality standards at all times.
  • Apply mechanical principles to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair engines and related components safely and efficiently.
  • Translate customer complaints into structured troubleshooting and repair plans.
  • Use specialized diagnostic equipment and software to identify faults and determine corrective actions.
  • Perform repairs, validate completed work, and ensure equipment operates to specification.
  • Accurately document diagnostic findings, repairs, and test results for payment processing and historical service records.

Minimum Requirements

  • Valid South African driver’s license (essential).

Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following qualification pathways:

Option 1: NATED Engineering Route

  • National Senior Certificate (NSC / Matric – Grade 12), plus
  • N3 Engineering Studies Certificate with the following subjects passed:
    • Mathematics
    • Engineering Science
    • Engineering Drawing
    • Diesel Trade Theory / Motor Trade Theory / Mechanotechnology
  • N4 Engineering Studies Certificate with the following subjects passed:
    • Mathematics
    • Engineering Science
    • Mechanical Draughting
    • Mechanotechnics
  • N6 Mechanical Engineering Certificate, with four subjects passed from:
    • Mathematics
    • Mechanotechnics
    • Mechanical Drawing and Design
    • Power Machines
    • Fluid Mechanics
    • Physics
    • Strength of Materials
    • Supervisory Management

Option 2: NCV Route

  • National Senior Certificate (NSC / Matric – Grade 12), plus
  • NCV Level 4 (TVET College qualification) with the following subjects passed:
    • Engineering Process
    • Professional Engineering Practice
    • Applied Engineering Technology
    • Automotive Repair & Maintenance
    • Mathematics
    • English First Language
    • Life Skills
    • Computer Literacy
