We invite suitably qualified and experienced professionals to apply for the position of Winding Engine Driver SF (C3) within our Platinum Operations in Rustenburg.
Role Purpose
The Winding Engine Driver SF is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of shaft winding systems, ensuring the hoisting and lowering of personnel, materials, and ore in strict compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), company standards, and site-specific procedures. This role is critical to shaft operations, production continuity, and the safety of all underground activities.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- NQF Level 4 / Grade 12 (National Senior Certificate or equivalent)
- Valid Winding Engine Driver Certificate issued by the DMR
- Onsetter’s Certificate
- Proven experience operating AC and DC winders
- Must have operated a winder within the last two (2) years as an appointed WED
- 1–3 years’ relevant experience as a Winding Engine Driver (or proof of competency for newly qualified WEDs)
- Medically fit for work in a mining environment
- Clear security screening record
- Valid driver’s licence (where applicable)
Key Responsibilities
Operational Excellence
- Operate AC and DC winding engines to hoist and lower men, material, and ore safely and efficiently
- Ensure full compliance with MHSA Chapter 16 and Sibanye-Stillwater Standards, Procedures, and Guidelines (SPGs)
- Reset automatic hoists following trip-outs to minimise production delays
- Identify, report, and respond to operational, mechanical, or electrical faults
- Assist engineering teams during non-routine tasks, including conveyance changes, shaft repairs, and inspections
- Maintain accurate daily records, including driver logbooks, stoppages, and callouts
Safety, Health, Environment & Risk (SHERQ)
- Uphold the highest SHE standards and promote a culture of zero harm
- Identify hazards, take corrective action, and report non-compliance incidents
- Participate in risk assessments, audits, and investigations
- Adhere to all site-specific regulations, safety instructions, and legal requirements
Legal & Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with MHSA, company instructions, and responsible engineer directives
- Assist during daily, weekly, and statutory inspections of winding systems
- Participate in audits and machinery compliance checks
Reporting & Administration
- Report incidents, accidents, or abnormal conditions to the Section Engineer and Foreman
- Complete all required operational and legal documentation accurately and timeously
Stakeholder & Team Engagement
- Maintain open and professional communication with engineering teams, supervisors, and shaft personnel
- Support teamwork and operational coordination across departments
Cost & Operational Efficiency
- Contribute to cost-saving initiatives through efficient operation of winding plants
- Support cash conservation efforts by minimising downtime and maintenance costs
People & Culture
- Support a values-driven organisational culture aligned with Sibanye-Stillwater’s development plans
- Provide coaching and on-the-job guidance to peers where required
- Inspire high performance, discipline, and accountability within the team
ESG & Responsible Mining
- Align daily operations with international responsible mining standards
- Support ESG initiatives relevant to SA PGM Operations, including the eTfS initiative
