About the Opportunity
This apprenticeship opportunity is exclusively for matriculants. A separate recruitment drive will open in August and September for all other applicants.
AFGRI offers a structured 3-year in-service training program leading to a qualification as a Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Mechanic. The first six months serve as a probation period for both the company and apprentice to assess suitability. Upon successful completion, a formal apprenticeship contract will be initiated.
Training Includes
- Practical training at a certified Training Institute (as required)
- Enrolment for relevant N subjects via distance learning (if applicable)
- Mandatory Saturday classes (if required)
- Product training from John Deere, other suppliers, and internal AFGRI trainers
- Ongoing workplace learning
Note: Training costs are covered by AFGRI, but failed subjects must be repeated at the apprentice’s own expense.
Commitment Terms
- Apprentices are required to “work back” the duration of their training upon qualification.
- Early withdrawal during the apprenticeship or work-back period may incur cost recovery.
- The contract cannot exceed 4 years, even if qualification is delayed.
Apprentice Responsibilities
- Train to become a qualified Tractor or Earthmoving Mechanic / Technician
- Perform maintenance and repairs on machinery
- Assist in stock control and general workplace duties
- Deliver excellent customer service
Minimum Requirements
- Valid driver’s license
- Strong communication and admin skills
- Computer literacy
- N2 Certificate Subjects:
- Mathematics
- Engineering Science
- Diesel Trade Theory
- Plus one of the following:
- Industrial Electronics
- Engineering/Technical Drawing
- Motor Trade Theory
If N2 is not held, Matric results will be considered with the following subjects:
- Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy) – Passed
- Technical Mathematics – Passed
- Physical or Technical Science – Passed
- Engineering Graphics and Design – Passed
AFGRI may sponsor the completion of N2 subjects through Further Education and Training for qualifying applicants.
