About the Opportunity

This apprenticeship opportunity is exclusively for matriculants. A separate recruitment drive will open in August and September for all other applicants.

AFGRI offers a structured 3-year in-service training program leading to a qualification as a Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Mechanic. The first six months serve as a probation period for both the company and apprentice to assess suitability. Upon successful completion, a formal apprenticeship contract will be initiated.


Training Includes

  • Practical training at a certified Training Institute (as required)
  • Enrolment for relevant N subjects via distance learning (if applicable)
  • Mandatory Saturday classes (if required)
  • Product training from John Deere, other suppliers, and internal AFGRI trainers
  • Ongoing workplace learning

Note: Training costs are covered by AFGRI, but failed subjects must be repeated at the apprentice’s own expense.


Commitment Terms

  • Apprentices are required to “work back” the duration of their training upon qualification.
  • Early withdrawal during the apprenticeship or work-back period may incur cost recovery.
  • The contract cannot exceed 4 years, even if qualification is delayed.

Apprentice Responsibilities

  • Train to become a qualified Tractor or Earthmoving Mechanic / Technician
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on machinery
  • Assist in stock control and general workplace duties
  • Deliver excellent customer service

Minimum Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Strong communication and admin skills
  • Computer literacy
  • N2 Certificate Subjects:
    • Mathematics
    • Engineering Science
    • Diesel Trade Theory
    • Plus one of the following:
      • Industrial Electronics
      • Engineering/Technical Drawing
      • Motor Trade Theory

If N2 is not held, Matric results will be considered with the following subjects:

  • Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy) – Passed
  • Technical Mathematics – Passed
  • Physical or Technical Science – Passed
  • Engineering Graphics and Design – Passed

AFGRI may sponsor the completion of N2 subjects through Further Education and Training for qualifying applicants.
