STUDENT INTERNSHIP CIRCULAR 009/2024
The City of Johannesburg is offering an internship programme designed to address the growing demand from tertiary institutions for students to gain practical, on-the-job experience. This programme provides valuable work-based training for students, helping them fulfill the requirements for their academic qualifications.
This opportunity is open to young people in the Johannesburg communities who meet the qualifications for this internship and have never participated in an internship programme before. The internship period will not exceed 18 months.

Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12 (NQF level 4) plus a Degree in Civil Engineering or Quantity Surveying.
- An Honours Degree would be an advantage.
- Only City of Johannesburg residents will be considered.
Primary Function: Assist with the measurement of quantities for Interim Payment Certificates and monitor invoices related to claims from the Implementing Agent.
Key Learning Areas:
- Manage activities related to Infrastructure construction according to City policies and guidelines.
- Prepare quarterly and monthly reports on Transport Infrastructure construction projects.
- Monitor financial controls and provide information for financial planning.
- Ensure quality deliverables and formulate project scope.
- Read and interpret design and detailed drawings.
- Monitor costs and ensure deliverables are completed within budget.
- Support progress tracking, cost management, and risk management.

The City of Johannesburg’s Environmental and Infrastructure Service Department (EISD) offers an internship programme to address the growing need for students to gain on-the-job experience. This programme is ideal for students from Johannesburg communities who qualify for this internship and have not previously participated in an internship programme.

Minimum Requirements:

Primary Function: Provide technical and administrative support to the Energy Sector Unit.

- Assist in developing policies, strategies, and plans for City compliance with the Energy framework.
- Monitor compliance with National Rationalized Specifications (NRSs).
- Carry out service delivery inspections and provide oversight on high-priority projects.
