About the Company

Starke Ayres, a division of Plennegy (Pty) Ltd, is a leading African seed specialist and a global supplier of high-quality vegetable, flower, and lawn seed varieties for both commercial and home garden markets.

We are currently seeking a General Worker to join our team in Kempton Park, contributing to the success of our seed production operations.


Key Responsibilities

The role involves assisting with all stages of plant cultivation to support seed production and research activities. Duties include:

  • Preparing, managing, and maintaining various plant growth stages — from sowing seeds to harvesting.
  • Counting, packaging, and processing seeds.
  • Cleaning and preparing seedling trays (soaking, washing, and drying).
  • Mixing and filling seedling trays and planting pots with soil.
  • Transferring trays from germination rooms to seedling houses and arranging them properly.
  • Setting up greenhouses, including connecting drippers and arranging filled pots.
  • Transplanting seedlings to greenhouses and fields.
  • Preparing and installing trellis ropes for plant support.
  • Identifying flowers at the correct stage and performing emasculation and pollination following breeder instructions.
  • Harvesting self-pollinated fruits and extracting, washing, cleaning, and drying seeds.

Requirements

  • Education: National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) – Essential
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Frequent hand use and fine motor skills.
    • Occasional standing and walking.
    • Ability to lift or move objects up to 10 pounds regularly.
    • Good visual ability (close, distance, color, and depth perception).
    • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
    • Clear communication and hearing abilities.

This is a hands-on role suited for individuals who are detail-oriented, physically active, and eager to work in an agricultural research environment.
