Minimum Requirements:

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate and maintain garden areas and outdoor spaces.
  • Prepare soil for planting and maintain trees, flowers, shrubs, and lawns.
  • Remove weeds and alien vegetation, and water gardens and lawns.
  • Monitor plant health and maintain overall landscape cleanliness.
  • Keep sidewalks, fences, planters, and benches in good condition.
  • Collect and dispose of refuse appropriately.
  • Operate and maintain gardening equipment such as mowers, trimmers, weed eaters, chainsaws, and hand tools.
  • Report defective tools or machinery to supervisors.
  • Assist with the preparation of grounds for functions and parades.
  • Apply Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) measures where necessary.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Qualification: Grade 8, ABET Level 4, or NQF Level 1–3.
  • Experience: No experience required, although experience in gardening, grounds maintenance, or general assistant duties will be an advantage.
  • Skills and Attributes:
    • Ability to read and write.
    • Good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
    • Self-motivated and reliable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain lawns, flowerbeds, trees, and pathways around the museum.
  • Water plants, remove weeds, prune trees and shrubs, mow grass, and sweep outdoor areas.
  • Relocate plants and trees, dispose of garden refuse, and assist in caring for the cycad collection, including pest control.
  • Clean paved areas using high-pressure cleaning equipment.
  • Ensure that signage, benches, bins, storerooms, and public spaces are neat and well-kept.
  • Maintain gardening tools and report any faults, damages, or maintenance needs (e.g., leaks or broken lights).
  • Assist with the movement and setup of exhibition materials, furniture, and display cases.
  • Support the construction, assembly, and upkeep of museum displays and exhibition structures under supervision.
  • Provide cleaning services in exhibition areas, workshops, and storage rooms.
  • Prepare venues for school visits, community events, and presentations by setting up chairs, tables, and equipment.
  • Assist with cleaning and resetting venues after functions.
  • Support caretakers and cleaners when required.
  • Perform other general maintenance or facility-related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
