Salary: R193 359 per annum (Level 04)
Centre:
- Training will take place at the Traffic Training College, Pietermaritzburg.
- Upon successful completion of the Traffic Officer’s Diploma, candidates must be willing to accept placement at any RTI station across KwaZulu-Natal.
Requirements:
- Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification (NQF Level 4).
- Valid Code B manual driving licence.
- No criminal record – SAPS clearance will be conducted before appointment.
- Medical fitness:
- Submit a medical certificate (not older than 3 months) confirming ability to perform strenuous physical exercise.
- Undergo a full medical examination at State expense before appointment.
- Age requirement: Applicants must be 35 years or younger on the first day of enrolment.
- Must be a South African Citizen or Permanent Resident.
- Must be a fit and proper person.
Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:
- Problem-solving, communication (verbal & written), driving skills.
- Innovative thinking and ability to work independently and in teams.
- Ability to interpret and apply legislation and policies.
Key Duties:
- Law Enforcement: Implement approved traffic law enforcement operations, ensure free traffic flow, control accident scenes, and conduct speed testing and roadblocks.
- Compliance Monitoring: Check drivers’ licences, vehicle roadworthiness, and enforce compliance at DLTCs and VTSs.
- Traffic Control & Crime Prevention: Patrol roads, provide assistance to motorists, escort abnormal loads, and issue fines or arrests where required.
- Administration: Maintain accurate records, comply with firearm regulations, and contribute to operational plans and HR development initiatives.

- Appointment is initially as a Trainee Provincial Inspector on a two-year fixed contract at the stated salary.
- Candidates must successfully complete the Traffic Officer’s Diploma within the two years.
- Successful graduates will be appointed as Provincial Inspectors (Level 6) on 12 months’ probation without a break in service.
- Failure to complete the course will result in termination of employment.
- Current Public Service employees must resign from their posts if appointed.

- Training will include: shift work (24/7 system, including weekends & holidays), physical fitness training, firearm competency, and strict alcohol testing.
- Graduates must serve at least 12 months in the RTI after qualification, or reimburse full training costs.
